Master Cylinders - Technical Information

    Fitting and maintenance

  • The master cylinders and clutches are machined from aluminium alloy and have a clear, hard anodised finish for protection.

  • Fitting and maintenance

  • All master cylinders and hydraulic clutches use a standard banjo bolt fitment for brakes lines of M10x1.25mm
  • Banjo bolt fitment on all front master cylinders and hydraulic clutches is parallel to the handlebar.
  • The wire clutches run standard Japanese/European cables. A special lever is available for Harleys.
  • Master cylinders designed for standard sized handlebars are also suitable for "fat" handlebars which have standard sized ends.
  • It is recommended that brake fluid is replaced at least yearly to avoid moisture causing any damage to the seals, etc.

  • Adjustment details

  • All the master cylinders and hydraulic clutches come with adjustable ratio. The range of adjustment is 5:1 to 3.8:1. In layman's terms this means that when set to the minimum (3.8:1) you have to move the lever further to get the same braking effect but there is a lot more sensitivity in the feel of the brakes.
  • The reach adjustment is carried out by hexagonal adjuster on the lever; moving the adjuster clockwise lowers the ratio and anticlockwise increases it. There are no positve stops allowing any ratio between the extremes to be selected, giving maximum adjustment capability.
  • The adjustable levers have a total adjustable range of 28mm. Adjustment can be easily carried out while riding using the index finger, without the need to let go of the handlebar or throttle.

    Master cylinder bore requirements

You need to ensure that any replacement master cylinder you obtain can cope with the calipers that it will be working with to ensure that you get the maximum performance. For ISR calipers, see the table below for guidance on required master cylinder bore size for front and rear brakes.
